About the work:
Found photos from forgotten social media sites are composited with flyer text from golden-era rave events and printed in ink by the UK's premier flyposter suppliers.
Meanwhile, advertising posters are clandestinely removed from the streets then masterfully assembled in Sam's Essex studio. Layers of glue, ink and acrylic amass until pure club maximalism is achieved. Each piece is a throwback to raving times past and a nod to the hardcore continuum ever present in contemporary club culture.
About the Artist
Sam Shrug is a UK-based mixed media artist exploring club music nostalgia through street poster assemblage, paint and halftone stencil techniques.
Disaffected in a long career as an electronic music live act (and under a secret pseudonym), Shrug found himself drawn to the pursuit of pasting art on the streets; using materials literally pulled from the walls he collects and tears flyposters and combines with ink and spray paint and stencils to create his unique style of clubber-centric collage work that channels the fighting spirit of illegal raves and the suave decadence of clubland hedonism.
